CHAPTER 23

Larson and Abner didn’t speak for the first ten minutes of the journey back to Alabama, each wrapped in his own thoughts. Abner broke the silence.

“Didn’t the man say he’d kill us both if we didn’t manage to kill those two?”

“I don’t think he said those precise words, but yeah, he will.”

“So why are we going back to Alabama, Lars?”

“Cos, that’s where we live and where our money and shit are. It’s going to take us some time to get there, so we have a while to come up with a plan.” Abner didn’t respond for a while, then said.

“We could turn ourselves in to the authorities, maybe? Tell them about Mr. Bentley. We’d do time, but maybe we’d get to live.” Larson Stipp turned and looked at Abner, snorted, then laughed an un-humorous laugh.

“I don’t think you appreciate just how ruthless our employers are, do you?” Larson said, shaking his head.

“What?”

“Unless I’m very much mistaken, this operation, this mission to kill these two guys, is shady, unofficial. Maybe some big shot with a lot of influence using the Feds for his own ends? We give ourselves up to the authorities, they’d have to shut us up. We’d be better off shooting ourselves in the head now. Better than going to prison and being shanked. You understand what I’m saying?”

“You mean they’d have us killed in prison? Couldn’t we ask for special protection?”

“Yeah, and they’d still have us killed,” said Larson, raising his eyes to heaven. Abner was quiet while he thought about what Lars had just said.

“You sure Lars.”

“I’m sure Abner trust me. Giving ourselves up is not an option, okay? We have just two options if we want to live. Option one, we kill them two detective mothers like we were supposed to. Option two is we run.”

“So, do you think we can still find a way to kill those two guys? ‘Cos if we were going to do that, why are we leaving?”

“I got to have time to think. I keep thinking about that show back there. All those cops turning up, sirens and flashing lights an all. I mean, what was that all about?”

“You know what it was about. The two guys told the cops we were trying to set up a hit, so the cops came looking for us.”

“Yeah, but... That’s not the way they’d do it. I don’t know, seemed a bit...”

“A bit what Lars?”

“More like they was trying to scare us, you know, like when we go hunting, you creep up all quiet like, then make a big noise to flush the birds out so you can shoot ‘em.”

“But no one shot us, did they?”

“No, they didn’t, but I just got this feeling, I don’t know, maybe I’m getting..., what is it?”

“Paranoid?” said Abner, turning round so he could look out of the rear window, then bending forward to look in the side mirror.

“You think they’d try to tail us rather than try to catch us, or kill us?”

“I don’t know Abner. I’m all screwed up.
